I am a potter. I dart, push, and pull the clay after it comes off the wheel. I spend far too much time on every pot I make, from throwing, to altering, to glazing – I am not a production potter. Clean, comfortable, well-crafted pots are what I strive for. Every kiln is something new, something better, something to improve, a new idea to try.
I am constantly learning, my work is constantly evolving. This evolution comes from studying contemporary as well as historic pots. It comes from late nights and weekends in the studio, and conversations with fellow artists, co-workers, family and teachers. It comes with learning how to make my pots “mine” and helps to keep me interested.
As I have recently completed my BFA I take some comfort in all of the possibilities that clay allows. I have high expectations that it will never get boring; there will always be something new to try, a new process to learn, and a new kiln to open.
